NORTH RIVER The 50th Annual Hudson River White Water Derby kicks off today, (Saturday, May 5) in North River, with related events going on throughout the area. The derby draws hundreds of participants and thousands of spectators to what has become one of the most popular white water events in the Northeast. Below is a schedule of events. For more information about the derby, visit the official derby Web site at www.whitewaterderby.com. The Derby Slalom Races begin today at 11 a.m. at Barton Mines Road and Route 28, North River. Registration begins at 8 a.m. at the Alexander Funeral Home parking area on Route 28, North River The traditional pre-Derby Chuck Severance Memorial Race that was scheduled for last Saturday has been changed because of unusual high water conditions. The race is now scheduled for 3:30 p.m., today after the White Water Derby races in North River and North Creek on that day. The event was named for an Olmstedville native who was a ranger, writer and storyteller for many years. Severance was one of the original members of the Johnsburg Fish & Game Club, which founded the Hudson River White Water Derby. At just over 4 miles, the Severance runs from North River to North Creek, featuring some rapids and rolling water. This down-river race starts at the 13th Lake road junction with Route 28 at the Hudson River in North River ends at the North Creek Railroad Depot, and is comprised of two-person teams in identical canoes. 4-6 p.m., today Tannery Pond Auditorium: Awards Party with door prizes, free refreshments and video showing of white water action that day. Trophies will be presented. 5-7 p.m., today at North Creek Methodist Church, Main St., North Creek, Roast Pork Dinner until all are served or food runs out. The Derby down-river Race from the North Creek Railroad Depot area about 7 and a half miles down-river to Riparius takes off Sunday, at 11 a.m. Registration begins at 8 a.m. at the North Creek Railroad Depot. Two breakfast fundraisers are being sponsored by the Johnsburg Historical Society: today from 8-10 a.m., Route 28 and Barton Mines Road, North River, and Sunday, from 8-10 a.m. at the North Creek Railroad Depot, featuring hot drinks, muffins and fruit.
