SARANAC LAKE - Three staff members at Adirondack Medical Center were recently rewarded for going the extra mile.
The "Above and beyond the call of duty," or ABCD Award, is presented to AMC employees who "provide exemplary services or care outside of their job requirements and reflects positively on them, their field of practice, community and AMC."
The program began in March 2008, and since then, 14 staff members from all three AMC facilities have been recognized. After a four month drought, three staff members have been given the award so far in 2009.
Lillian Hoy, a Certified Nurse Assistant at AMC-Mercy in Tupper Lake, was the first to be honored with the award this year.
According to a press release from AMC, Hoy always arrives early to work and often comes in on her days off to help other staff. Hoy even came in on her Thanksgiving holiday to bolster a short-handed crew. She is noted as an excellent mentor to new employees and one who goes out of her way to help hospital residents in need, even buying things for them when they don't have the money.
At AMC-Uihlein in Lake Placid, MDS Coordinator Kathy Strack, was given ABCD recognition earlier this month.
Strack was complimented for her willingness to take on extra duties while another employee has been on extended medical leave, handling staffing issues whenever there is turn-over or absences amongst nursing staff. Also, she was recognized for her extra efforts fundraising for charitable organizations at AMC-Uihlein.
Linda Savarie, Patient Education Coordinator, is the most recent ABCD recipient at AMC's main facility in Saranac Lake.
Savarie was commended for her selfless efforts caring for a particular patient who had undergone a complex surgical procedure. The patient and her family required home-care education, Savarie's specialty, but also significant one-on-one time for her treatment. Savarie spent countless extra hours on nights and weekends assisting this patient and her family with treatment, making herself available to assist other staff should a need arise.
In addition to a certificate of appreciation, each award recipient was given a $50 gift certificate.
