LONG LAKE - At approximately 4:30 a.m. May 23 a blaze rarely seen in its ferocity engulfed and leveled the Blarney Stone Restaurant on Route 30 in Long Lake.
"It was really a huge fire," Long Lake Fire Chief Shawn Wright said. "The building was pretty large and our primary water source was too close to be usable."
Wright said that town water department officials worked with firefighters to increase the flow to local hydrants.
"We probably put 40,000 gallons on that fire," Wright said.
More than 40 firefighters - representing Long Lake, Newcomb and Tupper Lake departments - fought the fire for more than 2 hours, officials said.
When it was finally extinguished, the once proud structure was nothing more than a heap of charred wood.
"We haven't been to a fire that big in some time," he said.
Although four apartments were present on the structure's second floor, no injuries or fatalities were reported.
Wright said that the cause of the blaze is currently under investigation.
