SARANAC LAKE - The Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce announced last week that it needs sponsors for the annual Summer Concert Series.
Executive Director Sylvie Nelson said she wants to schedule at least eight shows, but without Arts Council for the Northern Adirondacks funding, the chamber needs public support.
"This year, unfortunately, the chamber did not receive the ACNA grant that we usually had in the past to support the concert series," Nelson said. "So, we've targeted our former sponsors who have been very generous when it comes to supporting the concert series."
Nelson hopes the community will respond.
"We're reaching out to our historically very generous local businesses," she added. "And we're hoping they will respond." This summer's series will return to a previous format, with shows taking place in the bandshell on Berkley Green instead of Riverside Park. Nelson hopes to book concerts each Thursday in July and August.
"Last year we went down from two concerts to one concert per week and it was on Friday night," Nelson said. "We did discuss the fact that the Art Walk is on Thursday night and also quite a bit of our retailers are open Thursdays. We thought perhaps what we should do is instead of having the concerts on Fridays, we'd move it back to Thursdays."
Hosting concerts on the Berkley Green would also bring more business to downtown, Nelson added.
So far, Neslon said the chamber has committed to the annual July 4 concert. Historically, that show has kicked-off the concert series.
"So definitely, we'll have a concert starting at 7 p.m. at Riverside Park on the Fourth of July, and that will precede the fireworks which usually follow the concert at dusk."
Potential sponsors should contact Nelson at the chamber.
"We're playing it by ear right now," she said. "Of course, we want to provide the community with the same musical experience we have in the past, but we need to be realistic financially."
