Denton Publications has a brand-new Web site and it's one that will offer even more to readers.
The site, which retains the same Web address at www.denpubs.com, officially launched Dec. 12. Readers will now find several new features on the site, from photo galleries to on-line polls, blogs and podcasts, and much more.
The site was redesigned by the corporation's Web development team with the readers in mind, said Denton Publications president and publisher Daniel E. Alexander.
"The evolution of technology and creativity with the use of the Internet requires a constant repositioning and thus at some point you realize that it's better to start all over than keep building on an outdated platform," said Alexander. "The new Web site will provide our readers with faster access to information, more information and a greater opportunity to interact with our staff and the articles."
Edward Coats, president and publisher of New Market Press - the Vermont publishing branch of Denton Publications based in Middlebury - said the site will allow those wanting to access news from both sides of the states' borders and beyond to do so in a more convenient way.
"This shows our commitment to the communities in which we serve that we will stay on the cutting edge to bring them the news and services that are important to them," said Coats.
John Gereau, managing editor of Denton Publications, said the Web site's main page offers a calendar inclusive of the corporation's entire readership area, which maximizes the amount of people it will reach. The calendar allows visitors to post their own events, with the option to select whether it is a recurring event. That way, it will save the person submitting the information from having to enter it more than once, he said. The calendar is joined on the main page by a regional news section showing breaking news, weather updates, letters to the editor, and local columns - all of which are fully-searchable.
As a result, the new site provides a much more user-friendly format for submitting editorial, placing a display advertisement or classified ad.
"Our new Web site is, in a word, awesome," said Gereau. "I think it rivals or surpasses anything in the region, or state for that matter."
From the main page, there are several directions in which visitors may navigate the site. A menu bar toward the top of the page offers links to local news, regional news, classified advertisements and contests, among other features.
One new feature visitors to the site may find of particular interest is the Media Lounge. There, they will find links to blogs, podcasts and photo galleries. The growing Blogs section offers daily commentary on a variety of issues by members of Denton Publications staff. The Podcasts section features both the Clinton County and Essex County editions of North Country Commerce, business and community programs hosted by Denton Publications editors Jeremiah Papineau and Chris Morris, respectively. The programs are the result of a partnership with Hall Communications, based in Burlington, Vt., and regularly air on Hall Communications stations throughout the North Country.
"With both our versions of North Country Commerce, editor Chris Morris and I aim to keep our readers and Hall Communications listeners informed on a variety of issues like starting a small business and avoiding racking up credit card debt during the holidays," said Papineau. "It's just another example of our commitment to our corporation's motto, which is 'We're more than a newspaper, we're a community service.'"
The Media Lounge also offers links to the latest entertainment news, stock reports, lottery results, gas prices, recipes and more.
The "Local Links" section, which is also accessible through the main page, offers an extensive and comprehensive listing of local areas of interest, such as chambers of commerce, schools, hospitals, and municipal governments. There are also links to community resources such as job placement firms, historical associations, museums and tourism agencies.
Those interested in finding the most current edition of the Denton publication they receive, such as the North Countryman, may select it from the "Local News" link or by scrolling to the bottom of the main page where publications are listed by icon in a simple scroll and click format. Once on an individual newspaper's home page, readers may scroll through the week's top stories, including breaking news and photo galleries tailored to each publication.
"We gather and provide information and while the Internet makes it easy for almost anyone to provide that service, the public has come to know and trust our ability to provide this service," said Alexander. "It would be easier to ignore the future but sooner or later you've got to move forward. Our company has always pursued the latter over the former."
"Denpubs.com is easy to navigate, interactive and just a whole lot of fun to visit. It is a shining example of the innovative people we have employed here at Denton Publications," said Gereau. "I would highly encourage everyone to check it daily for developing news that effects their community and lives."
