The Empire State Winter Games officially get under way this evening with opening ceremonies at the 1980 Herb Brook Arena in Lake Placid.
More than 1,000 athletes and their families are in the Olympic region for three days of competition in a variety of winter sports, including hockey, figure skating, snowboarding, speed skating and more.
Officials canceled the games late last year because of New York's ongoing fiscal crisis. But a consortium of local governments, organizations, and private businesses has saved the games, and organizers say the current model is sustainable for the future.
Events will be staged throughout the greater Lake Placid area at venues maintained by the state Olympic Regional Development Authority.
