WEVERTOWN - The Wevertown Country Story on Route 28 is reviving the presence of a neighborhood grocery store in Wevertown. Owners ceremoniously cut a ribbon to mark the store's grand opening Oct. 9. "We got off to a great start," said owner and manager Nancy Heckett. "It has even been a little overwhelming."
The store officially opened Oct. 2, in the building that was a busy establishment from the 1970s to the 1990s under the name of Conway Country Store owned by the Conway family.
Joan Conway joined owners Heckett and her husband Bert at the ribbon cutting as a gesture of good luck to the new business, according to Heckett.
The store offers local buyers a variety of goods from deli and bakery including fresh Boar's Head cold cuts, dairy, meats and produce, dry goods, organic and natural foods, gluten-free products, Nettle Meadow goat cheese, baked goods and other locally made Adirondack products. The store will also feature weekly specials.
"We would like to be known for our fresh products including baked goods," said Heckett.
The Heckett family purchased the store from the Donovan family in January of this year and have been making renovations in preparation for opening ever since. In the last week, they have hired six new staff members from local communities to fill the schedule and operate the daily running of the store, according to Heckett.
"We have been really busy during breakfast and lunch since our opening," said Heckett. "We are sometimes having trouble keeping up with all of our cold cut and bread orders, which is a mixed blessing."
Aside from groceries, there is also seating at the store for visitors to eat in. Heckett anticipates adding more things to their menu and expanding in the future.
The store has been attracting a steady local crowd and Heckett is hopeful the word is spreading and their success will continue.
Wevertown Country Store is open daily from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information or to find out about weekly specials, contact the store at 251-5555 or visit www.wevertowncountrystore.com.
