INDIAN LAKE - Despite some sizable holes left by graduating seniors Elizabeth Hamden at defense and Sierra Olbert at midfield, head coach Dave Olbert expects to put a competitive and seasoned team on the field this year.
The Orange also graduated Colleen Nerney, Karissa Giessen, Kaylie Miller, Merrill Pine, Lydia Wilson and Amanda Forsell, bringing their total to five starters and eight overall lost to graduation.
"We have some big holes to fill," said Olbert. "But, the girls are well-prepared this year and have been working really hard to do that."
In his fourth year with the Lady Orange, Olbert has already moved senior Melanie Pierson to the defensive line to replace Hamden's strong presence. Sophomore Emma Gray will take over Sierra Olbert's responsibilities at midfield. Olbert went on to play soccer at the varsity level at SUNY Morrisville this year.
Olbert is moving all-star and leading scorer Carli Reynolds to a new position for her senior year. She finished last year's season with 18 goals and five assists and will be seen from the midfield line this season.
"She sees the field well," said Olbert. "I have confidence that she will still lead us in scoring off the front line. She has no problem scoring from outside the 18.
Senior Murphy Farrell will join the scoring effort from the front.
The Orange return the goalie, senior Allison Pine to the net this year. She recorded seven shutouts last year and Olbert expects even more form her this year.
Olbert and the Lady Orange are defending a Division III Championship from last year and the team is confident they can bring home the title once again. He sees competition in both Minerva\Newcomb and Wells, but thinks his girls will come out on top and has also developed a strong schedule of non-league games.
"It's great experience for players to do new things and face new teams that challenge their game," said Olbert. "We look forward to playing teams like Chazy, Willsboro, Elizabethtown and Schroon Lake from Division I."
Other players to watch from the Lady Orange include sophomores Jessica Bain at stopper, Morgan Hinkley at midfield, Morgan King at striker, Jill Miller at wing and Alyssa Cuthbert.
"We are returning seven sophomores with varsity experience," said Olbert. "These girls are used to my coaching and the fundamentals of the game. If we utilize our time well, we will be tough to beat."
