The Otter Creek falls at Vergennes
Vergennes Day celebrates its 30th year Saturday, Aug. 27. On the Friday evening before, the event kicks off with a street dance featuring the music of “The Hitmen”, 7-11 p.m. Vergennes Day, hosted by the Addison County Chamber of Commerce, is a celebration of city and community and can be enjoyed by all ages. Activities on Saturday, Aug. 27, take place between 7 a.m.-4 p.m.
The day begins with a pancake breakfast at the Vergennes Fire Station, 7-10:30 a.m. At 9 a.m. the Little City 5K and 10K races and walk will start in front of the Vergennes Opera House.
Registration begins at 8 a.m. from Steven’s House on the corner of Main and N. Green Streets. More information and registration is available at www.runvermont.org.
The bandstand in City Park will be occupied throughout the day by several musical groups: Vergennes City Band at 10 a.m.; The Benoits at 11:15 a.m., The Galaxies/Take Two at 1:15 p.m., and L.C. Jazz at 2:30 pm. City Park is also the site of more than 75 crafters’ and vendors’ booths offering fine handcrafts, locally made products, food and more.
For youngsters the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad and Safe Kids Addison County will be at Bixby Library from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to inspect and fit a limited supply of bike helmets. At the Vergennes Fire Department, kids will enjoy the ever-popular Bubble Pit.
The Lake Champlain Maritime Museum’s Lois McClure, a full-scale replica of an 1822 Class sailing/canal boat will be available for free tours, 11 a.m.-6 p.m., at Falls Park.
Vergennes Union High School is the site of the antique vehicle, tractor and engine show. See this nostalgic display (between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.) and vote for your favorite! VUHS will also host the Champlain Valley Flyers, flying radio-controlled airplanes which will run between 10 a.m. and noon.
The Lions will be selling barbecued chicken in City Park. The Rotary’s Rubber Duckie Race at 3:30 p.m. is a tradition at the Basin.
Also, many of the area’s merchants will be offering sales and specials.
