NEWCOMB - With only two seniors suiting up, the Mountaineers face the upcoming season with a young team. head coach Millie Winslow hopes, however, to be able to surprise a few rival teams.
"We are young and we have some gaps to fill both offensively and defensively," she said. "But I am confident that the new players will rise to the occasion."
Winslow lost strong senior sweeper Brandon Poulton and striker/wing Tatsuki Miyazato from last year's team and their positions will be the hardest to fill, according to Winslow.
Senior midfielder Jesse Montanye and striker/wing Tim Fabin also graduated from last year's squad.
Winslow hopes to see a lot from returning players Wesley Labar and Morgan Winslow at striker as well as Roger Kelly and Taylor Goodspeed on defense. Chris O'Conner will move in to fill in the gaps at midfield and Dylan Saville will continue the success he has last year in the goal.
Kelly joins Ben Fish as the only two seniors returning to the Mountaineers.
Winslow is looking forward to seeing what international students Max Mueller and Quan Minh Lud bring to the team this year. She hopes they will find a home with the team and help to fill in some of the gaps.
Johnsburg will be the team to beat for Minerva\Newcomb, according to Winslow.
"I am excited to see how me match up with the teams that have a little more experience than we do this year," she said.
Fundamentals have been the first on the Mountaineers' priority list during the beginning of the season.
"They have been working hard at drills and on team cohesiveness," said Winslow.
With summer practices near a close as the school year approaches, the team is beginning to come together, according to Winslow.
"I expect us to fall somewhere in the middle of the league, but we certainly have the potential to surprise a few teams," she said.
