PLATTSBURGH Sometime in October the North Country Farm and Family Center will be moving to 550 Route 3 and into the former UPS building behind Taylor Rental. The North Country Shopping Center, the stores current location, will be razed to make room for a stadium seating movie theater and, hopefully, several rumored businesses. Store Manager Dorothy Blew says, We are sad to leave where we are. This has been our home for twenty years. We hope our old customers will follow and we hope that we will find some new ones on Upper Cornelia Street.
Dorothy Blew has a right to say she will miss the current location. Shes been employed there since the store opened in 1988. Over the years the Farm and Family Center has expanded its offerings to include hardware, gifts, sporting goods, boots and clothing. Since only the boots and clothing lines will be moved to the new store, theres a huge amount of merchandise on sale at 33% off.
Asked why Farm and Family has thrived all these years in spite of big name competition Dorothy Blew said, Our forte is personal attention. We dont skimp on staff. We always have somebody here to take care of you. The huge square footage store currently has twenty-five employees and as many as forty during the holidays. Mrs. Blew explained, People come to us for selection and customer service. The people who work in our clothing and boot departments give the customer one on one service. If the customer needs two hours, we will give them two hours. Customers also value the stores friendly staff several of whom are long-time employees. Mrs. Blew said customers often stop by just to say hello even when theyre not shopping for something. She added, This is a place where you can come in and talk about family or vacations.
Dorothy Blew is also proud of Farm and Familys product quality and merchandise selection. Carhartt and Woolrich are the stores major clothing lines and in boots they stock the world famous brands Red Wing, Chippewa, Carolina, Northerner, Sorel and Kamik. Blew said, We probably have the largest selection in the area of several brands. We do special orders. If we dont have it here we will get it for you.
The stores clothing is geared to the hunter, construction worker, farmer or weekender anyone working outside including women. Dorothy Blew said she plans to stock Woolrichs womens line in the new store along with Carhartts kids clothing. Many young boys like to dress just like dad. Some clothing trends even surprise the manufacturers. Blew said Carhartt developed its Arctic Line for workers on the Alaska pipeline. When the pipeline was completed thousands of items were still in warehouses so Carhartt wholesaled them to its retail stores. To Carhartts surprise, the Arctic line took off and sales have been a phenomenal for many years. Carhartt has also made great strides in jeans and sales have been outstanding.
The North Country Farm and Family Center is bringing a broad array of quality footwear and clothing products to its new Route 3 store. When you combine that with its experienced, customer-oriented staff, it sounds like a winning combination.
