PLATTSBURGH - The State University of New York at Plattsburgh has many events open to the general public. However, the event planned for Tuesday, March 3, is one-of-a-kind.
Chris Chelko and Michael DuBois, founders of The Adult Circus, a "two-man variety show," will showcase their talents at the Angell College Center Warren Ballrooms beginning at 8 p.m. The event will be free, courtesy of the university's student association.
Chelko and DuBois joined forces while attending college at Penn State University. There, they both became involved in the school's magic club, quickly becoming friends. Now, five years since graduating college, the dynamic duo travels across the country, performing for other colleges, universities and even celebrities.
Kathleen Taylor, vice president for student activities, first saw The Adult Circus in Hartford, Conn. There, she attended the National Association for Campus Activities Conference, which gives college and universities ideas as to activities they can host for students.
"I have seen them perform, and they are hilarious," Taylor said. "It's definitely not like most comedy acts that you see, because they do have magic in there and telepathy was crazy, the way they present it."
"They are definitely someone that caught our eye," she added.
In an interview with Chelko, the entertainer explained this year the team is working on even more stunts to change up the show and give their audiences something new to see.
"We want to add more circus stuff, stunts and skills ... Mike's been working really hard on some more unicycle stuff and the flag rope. I'm working on a rola bola and handstand act," Chelko said. "We still want our audiences to see something different. Especially in the college market ... We just want to be able to provide something that's new to that audience as well as new to us."
However, Taylor believes the show also has a lot to offer people who aren't in college.
"I think this show is kind of a timeless show," said Taylor. "No matter what age you are, you're going to be astounded by magic and telepathy and things of that nature."
Chelko and DuBois not only cater to colleges and universities, but even had a stint on NBC's The Tonight Show with Jay Leno back in 2004.
"It was a great experience. Got a lot of exposure," Chelko said, adding NBC has been "a great company to us."
"We've got a number of gigs with them," he added.
Such "gigs" include performing at an NBC executives party in Las Vegas and performing at Rockefeller Center in New York City.
"That was a great event because we ended up meeting basically the entire cast from every show on NBC," Chelko recalled. "Tina Fey, Conan [O'Brien], Steve Carell. Everybody was there."
"Definitely a great resume builder," he added.
Chelko said he believes The Adult Circus has grown more and more every year.
"We've been doing really well. Every year's better than the last," he said. "Our fan base has gotten a lot stronger over the years. It's just been really good."
