To the Times of Ti:
We have an important event coming up in Ticonderoga. The vote on the proposed school building project will take place on Sept. 25.
As a member of the facilities committee, I can tell you that the project was looked at very carefully. It was important to the committee to remain fiscally responsible to the taxpayers of our district, which I believe we have done.
At the same time, as a parent, I know that we need to ensure the safety and security of our children. This plan will enhance the safety of our buildings by moving the main offices to the building entrances to better monitor visitors. Enclosing the libraries will give the students secure areas to go in the event of an emergency. Unfortunately, this has become a priority in our ever-changing times. There is also a need to upgrade our aging facilities to give our children expanded opportunities to achieve.
These are not frivolous items. The proposed changes are needed in our school district. If they are not covered with a bond project many of these items will have to go into the regular school budget without many of the state building aid benefits.
I urge you to vote yes on Sept. 25. Rick Smith
