LAKE PLACID The Adirondack Community Trust (ACT) is pleased to announce $15,000 in grants from the Uihlein-Ironman Sports Fund of Lake Placid awarded to local athletes and sports organizations during a ceremony at Heaven Hill Farm. The Uihlein-Ironman Sports Fund of Lake Placid provides grants to competitive young athletes with regional, national and international promise. The fund also provides program support to sports organizations that expose area youth to summer and winter sports that foster our next generation of competitive athletes. The Fund, established as a unique partnership between the Henry Uihlein II and Mildred A. Uihlein Foundation and Ironman North America, recognizes the history of Lake Placid not only as a sporting capital and producer of talented athletes, but also as the only community in the United States to host two Olympic Winter Games. A five-person advisory committee made up of local residents and representatives from the sponsoring organizations reviewed the submitted applications. The following local athletes received grants: Megan Bagg, alpine skiing; Evan Bliss, ski jumping; Leigh Anne Connors, alpine skiing; Kelsey Locke, alpine skiing; Georgiana Knox, ice skating; Chris Mazdzer, luge; Aimee Caligiore, golf; Jenna Politi, ice skating; Tim Burke, biathlon; Donald Stewart, speed skating; Lars, Kara, and Haley Johnson, freestyle, freestyle, and biathlon; Bill Demong, Nordic combined; Jenna Politi, figure skating; Andris Blumbergs, freestyle; Krissa Miller, figure skating; Colin Delaney, ski jumping; Christie Sousa, figure skating; Annelies Cook, Nordic skiing; Julianne Stemp, nordic skiing and cycling; Peter Frenette, ski jumping. Four nonprofit organizations also received grants: Tri-Lakes Youth Lacrosse, Adirondack Stride for Pride, The Skating Club of Lake Placid and the Adirondack Luge Club. The Adirondack Community Trust is honored to be administering this Fund in partnership with two respected institutions that continue to invest in Lake Placid, said Cali Brooks, ACTs Executive Director. This fund is also investing in the youth of the Olympic region to support healthy pursuit of athletic excellence. ACTs mission is to unite donors charitable objectives with the needs of the Adirondack region.
