NORTH CREEK - This year, the Johnsburg Central School Class of 2011, is taking a fresh look at the way students traditionally raise money.
Thanks to a unique concept introduced by their Class Advisor, Mrs. Kiely Knickerbocker, their efforts are expected to support local business while the class strives toward its own fund-raising goals.
This week the class started selling discount cards that are valid on every purchase made at a dozen participating local businesses. The cards are available for $12 and will make an excellent gift idea for the holidays.
Knickerbocker stumbled across the idea while researching school fund-raising on the internet and immediately saw it as something that could benefit the class and the community.
"It's a unique idea and one of the best things is it doesn't require any start-up costs," Knickerbocker said.
The fund-raising effort will go toward the Class of 2011 Junior Prom, a senior class "day trip," and the necessities for graduation.
Realizing the value of local business and her desire to share an important lesson with the class, Knickerbocker found it to be an "easy sell" with business owners.

"All I really did was explain to them how it benefited the class and would benefit their businesses by encouraging people to shop locally more often," she added. "With our school being so small and our community being so small, in a lot of ways I felt we were saturated with sales. This is a much different way to go about it."
The cards are valid through Dec. 1, 2009 and can be purchased from any member of the JCS sophomore class.
The school is hopeful that a positive community response this year will result in the idea becoming a component of the student's future efforts.
"We're hoping that if this goes well this year, we can do it again next year and more people and businesses are able to participate and benefit," she concluded.
The following community businesses are participating in the JCS Class of 2011 Discount Card program:
Andie's Restaurant at Smith's, Beaver Brook Outfitters, Cafe' Sarah, Christine's Salon, The Foothills of the Adirondacks, Four Seasons Floral Shop, Garnet Hill Cross Country Ski Center, Hudson River Trading Company, Marsha's Family Restaurant, Mary Kay with Erica Thelen, Moxham Mtn. Motors, and The Source.
