After the closing of Everywear's shop in downtown Brandon a new business has opened in the retail space. Contrary Mary's Craft Boutique is a 1,000-square-foot store located at 15 Center St. The shop sells crafting and sewing supplies and finished goods created mostly by Vermont craftspeople.
Eileen and John Dolan are owners of the business that opened Feb. 4.
Eileen's sister, Mary Wheeler, operated Contrary Mary's Arts and Crafts in Hardwick, Vt., for three years before closing last summer.
"We purchased the business with the intention of reopening in Brandon when a suitable space could be found," according to Eileen Wheeler. "When 15 Center St. in Brandon became available. Through commercial Realtor Ray Ault of Rutland, we negotiated a lease with the property owner, Alex Rose of Burlington. No financing was involved, since we purchased the business out-of-pocket. We opened the renamed business as Contrary Mary's Craft Boutique on Feb. 4, once the trade name was approved by the secretary of state's office and we received state and federal tax IDs."
According to the Wheelers, the name was changed slightly to reflect Eileen's wish to emphasize crafts and to better fit into the Brandon community.
