As a Neighbor to Neighbor (N2N) AmeriCorps member, working with the Champlain Valley Agency on Aging (CVAA) this year, I have valued the chance to get to know a few of the great people in this area. Since my one-year term is almost over, I would like to thank all the people and organizations that have supported me and my endeavors as Ive attempted to help area seniors age with dignity and independence.
The N2N AmeriCorps position includes three main tasks: performing direct services, helping with volunteer management and presenting successful aging programs. My direct services with seniors have included opening mail, assisting with grocery shopping, and simply chatting for an hour or two. Through these seniors I have learned a lot about the challenges facing elders in our society; they have been good teachers for me.
It has been a privilege for me to meet many of CVAAs volunteers who help individual seniors on a one-to-one basis. All of these people are extremely valuable to us and to the community at large. They have taught me a lot about volunteer management as well as the idea of service. So thank you to all our volunteers.
Lastly, my successful aging programs have given me a way to get to know many seniors in a social setting. I taught two different Tufts Strong Living exercise classes, a computer class, and helped arrange various other programs. Presenting these programs has been the most challenging aspect of my year, but luckily I have had a lot of community support. Many groups and individuals offered me advice, donated their facilities, or assisted me with advertising. Through my on-going programs, I formed relationships with many of the people in my classes. These participants have helped me keep up my enthusiasm not only for their classes, but for the whole AmeriCorps experience as well. Thank you for your support and spirits.
As my term of service is coming to an end, we are recruiting new N2N AmeriCorps Members. If you would like more information about the position, call CVAA at 1-800-642-5119. This is a valuable and wonderful program. I know I have made a difference in elders lives, but there is still much need out there. And one last time, thank you.
