Broadway star Sarah Litzsinger and accomplished actor Billy Clark Taylor and Brett Stoelker (foreground) star in Adirondack Theatre Festival’s production of the award-winning musical “Next to Normal.” The show opens Thursday June 5 and continues over two weekends.
A compelling, acclaimed musical about contemporary family life — the Pulitzer prize-winning musical “Next to Normal” — is to be presented this week and next by the Adirondack Theater Festival.
Performances are set for July 5 through 7 and July 12 through 14 in the Charles R. Wood Theater on Glen St.
Featuring a surging pop-rock score, Next to Normal shatters the facade of a suburban family dealing with issues of mental illness. This intense and emotional yet hopeful musical depicts a family trying to take care of themselves and each other. Next to Normal contains mature themes and some adult language.
This production of Next to Normal stars noted Broadway actress Sarah Litzsinger, who has performed in such classics such as Les Miserables and Beauty and the Beast, in which she portrayed Belle.
The show is directed by Mark Fleischer, ATF's Artistic Producing Director. Fleischer said he saw Next to Normal on Broadway and thought it was incredibly moving, witty and surprising — and decided it would provide audiences an engaging theatre experience as it explores complex relationships.
“This show, while challenging for some, is for all generations and will certainly launch many conversations – one of my prime goals as a producer and director,” he said.
Next to Normal received the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the first musical to do so since Rent captured the award in 1998. It was also nominated for 11 Tony awards, winning three of them.
The Wood Theater is located at 207 Glen St., Glens Falls. Tickets are $25 through $40 and are available online at: ATFestival.org or by calling the box office at: 874-0800.
