MONTPELIER - A public prayer at a Vermont Town Meeting Day gathering in Franklin has sparked a law suit and the involvement of the American Civil Liberties Union.
The Vermont chapter of the ACLU is suing the Town of Franklin over its opening prayer at the annual Town Meeting last week.
Franklin resident and voter Marilyn Hackett contacted the ACLU about the prayer. The liberal ACLU is representing Hackett in the lawsuit.
According to ACLUofficials, the public prayer at Franklin's annual town meeting has been in effect for nearly a decade. ACLU officials claim the prayer is both a violation of Vermont's constitution and its public accommodations law.
Moderator Tim Magnant of Franklin has been named as one of the defendants.
The ACLUsaid Hackett has been trying to stop the prayer for several years to no avail.
