As school commenced, varsity athletic teams charged into their first week of play on Aug. 8. Local team fared well in the first week of play and promised exciting season ahead. Re-caps of the first week of games are as follows:
Johnsburg 8 - Warrensburg 0
Sean O'Neill netted four goals before halftime to push Johnsburg toward a commanding victory over Warrensburg in their non-league matchup on Sept. 8. Kevin Connor finished with two goals and four assists for the Jaguars, while Nick Porter and Alec McKee also scored.
Dylan Wolfe completed the shutout with eight saves in the goal, several of which where big stops near the end of the game.
Johnsburg 5 - Minerva\Newcomb 2
Tatsuki Mryacto put the Mountaineers within a goal of the Jaguars at 13:59 of the second half of their Sept. 10 contest. Sean O'Neill quickly replied with a goal less than a minute later.
Tim Fabin also tallied for Mountaineers.
O'Neill totalled three goals and Nick Porter added two to power the Jaguars to their win.
The Jaguars maintained an edge in shots at 21-16, while Dylan Wolfe made 12 saves in the net for the win.
Indian Lake/Long Lake 2 - Hadley/Luzerne 1
Kris Bain helped Indian Lake/Long Lake to its first victory of the season on Sept. 11 by delivering on a corner kick in non-league play against Hadley/Luzerne.
Hadley-Luzerne's Cecil Hayes tied the game with a shot from the top of 18, but was quickly answered by Colin Farrell, who capitalized on a loose ball in front of the net with 15 minutes left in regulation time.
Indian Lake/Long Lake 2 - Wells 1
Freshman Morgan King netted the winning goal with 45 seconds remaining in the Sept. 11 game to push Indian Lake/Long Lake past Wells.
After a slow start to their season, the Orange outshot Wells 21-8.
"We've had a lot of offense opportunities and have been getting real good chances," Orange coach Dave Olbert said. "We've just had a lot of trouble finishing."
Merrill Pine netted the team's first goal early, but was answered by Wells' Samantha Bartholf, who tied it at 1-1 in the second half.
Johnsburg 5 - Salem 1
Kelly Blackhurst and Emily Burns each scored two goals as Johnsburg defeated Salem in a non-league contest on Sept. 8.
The Jaguars dominated the goal and led from start to finish, scoring three goals in the second half.
Johnsburg 3 -North Warren 0
Keri Cleveland scored near the end of the first half and started the Lady jags off on their second victory of the season on Sept. 11.
Kelly Blackhurst and Kelsey Williford secured the shutout with two more goals in the second half, which were assisted by Sam Burns and Emily Burns respectively.
North Warren made it easy for Johnsburg goalie Cassandra Prouty, not getting a single shot off.
