SARANAC LAKE - With Gov. Paterson slashing state funding left and right in an effort to balance an increasingly volatile New York State budget, local artists received a rare reason to celebrate last week.
The Third Thursday Art Walks were awarded a grant totaling $1040 over the weekend - money that will play a key role in continuing the popular downtown Saranac Lake tradition.
The grant was made possible through the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) Decentralization program and was administered through the Arts Council for the Northern Adirondacks. Developing Community Arts (DCA) grants support professional-level arts activities that benefit the general public.
The $1040 will be used by organizers to pay a stipend to street performers that frequent the Art Walks. In years past, the event has featured magicians, African drumming, and a variety of local bands.
Third Thursday Art Walks occur on the third Thursday in months of June, July, August and September and generally run from 4:30-7 p.m. Artists, performers and musicians show off their talents at over 20 venues throughout downtown Saranac Lake.
The Art Walks are sponsored by the Saranac Lake Free Library. For more information call Tim Fortune at 891-1139.
