The Adirondack Arts in Education Partnership recently announced the recipients for its Local Capacity Building Arts in Education Regrant Program. Grant rewards will be used to support partnerships between North Country schools and local teaching artists or cultural organizations that focus on the integrated study of the arts and non-arts subjects. Projects involve direct collaboration between classroom teachers and teaching artists who will use a co-teaching method to integrate the arts into the curriculum and are currently underway. Locally, the following partnerships will be taking place this spring: Northeastern Clinton Central School and Pendragon Theatre English students in 9th and 10th grade will use learning standards involved in ELA and the arts to explore the elements involved in a theatrical production, including script development from a previously published work, staging and acting out the script, and technical mechanics for putting on a play. The final project will culminate in a theatrical performance of a play by the students, created from a literary work such as a novel or short story and presented with assistance from the drama club, Art students and English department. Peru Intermediate School and teaching artist Bucky Seiden Fifth-grade and speech language students will work with teaching artist Bucky Seiden to explore the geography, history and mythology in connection with the ancient cultures of the Western hemisphere. Students will create a variety of concrete representations of mythological figures and icons of the various cultures. A series of concrete stepping stones designed and created by students will guide visitors through the countries represented and studied students and visitors alike will be able to walk with the ancients. Standards addressed include ELA, MST, social studies and the arts. Applications were submitted in November by local schools, teaching artists and cultural organizations in Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Hamilton and Warren counties. Recipients were chosen on the basis of merit by a panel of Arts in Education professionals.
