HINESBURG The Hinesburg Land Trust hosted the 10th annual Turkey Lane Turkey Trot on Sunday, Nov. 25. Despite low temperatures early in the day, a field of 44 runners and 21 walkers turned out to heat up the race course. Participants enjoyed the day, either walking or running along the 4.25 mile loop. The course provided magnificent views of the land protected by the Hinesburg Land Trust. At days end, $655 were raised to help the Bissonette Project. In the mens field, Salisbury native Tony Bates, 48, finished first with a time of 25:04. Erin Lyman, 28, of Richmond paced the womens field with a time of 31:07. Two additional age groups were added this year to give older runners a chance at taking home a prize. Richard Wright, 60, of St. Johnsbury Center, placed fourth overall and won the mens 60 to 69 division. For the womens 60 to 69 division, it was Candi Schermerhorn of Diamond Point, New York who took home top honors. In the mens and womens 70 and up division, Don Lacharite, 76, and his wife Betty, 72, of Winooski, crossed the line together to take home the win. Dogs got a chance to shine as well at this years Turkey Trot, providing dogs and owners alike a chance to meet new friends. Sponsors for the event included Bells Maple Syrup, Kovals Coffee, Showtime Video and the Paisley Hippo Sandwich Shop, all located in Hinesburg. Event organizers are hoping to list the annual Turkey Lane Turkey Trot in the Guiness Book of World Records, as it is the only Turkey Trot run on a road named Turkey Lane.
