LONG LAKE - The traditional bed races returned to Long Lake July 4 as the tourism department rerouted the races to accommodate for the state Department of Transportation denial of their permits.
DOT reasons for the denial included no reasonable detours for the event, the date and time of the event correspond with times holiday travelers would be utilizing Route 30 and the event presents high safety risks.
The races were moved from Route 30 to School Street and time adjustments were made.
"The DOT may have denied us for safety reasons and lack of detours, but the Hamilton County Sheriff and New York State Troopers were on hand to put their stamp of approval on the festivities," said tourism director Alexandra Roalsvig. "The Long Lake Rescue Squad was standing by with the ambulance and we were off to the races."
Eight teams participated in this year's races, returning for the first time since 1992. Teams included: Gurney Journey, Birth of a Nation with birthing mother aboard sponsored by the Long Lake Rescue Squad, The Cellar Crew dressed as pink magical fairies, The Viking Ship with Molly Irvine and her crew, Rayome University, The Black Flies, Town of Long Lake Parks, Recreation & Water Department, Hoss's Country Corner, and Wallace Contracting/Fire Department.
The Black Flies received best in show honors and the winners are as follows:
First place - Wallace Contracting/Fire Department
Second place - The Black Flies
Third place - The Cellar Crew
"We hope that the success of this year's event will return the races to an annual tradition," said Roalsvig.
