A recent Addison Northwest Supervisory Union job posting for a bilingual migrant tutor, to work in Addison and Rutland counties, has a controversial Vermont blogger in an uproar. Vermont Woodchuck, the Internet handle for the outspoken political blogger and commentator at www.nerepublican.com, is upset about the school-district job posting. Last week, he identified ANWSU officials and staffer Sally Bushey on the testy conservative web site. According to the school districts job description, the job candidate must be fluent in Spanish and English and hold a certificate in ESL (English as a Second Language). The position also requires the person to work with 16 to 21 year old out-of-school youth in their homes in Addison and northern Rutland counties. Vermont Woodchucks web site claims the school district is intentionally aiding illegal (and legal) migrant workers in the state using taxpayer funds. In Vermont, our school taxes are close to the highest in the nation in per pupil spending. So why are we educating the citizens of sovereign countries who dont even pay taxes to our educational fund? Also, the age group puts these youth outside the usual range of students, according to the blog. Vermont Woodchuck, who has assiduously maintained his anonymity since first going online in 2006, was in the news recently for attacking a secessionist group called the Middlebury Institute (see the Eagle, Oct. 13,page 1). Now the Woodchuck is taking the Addison County school district to task for supporting illegal immigration. A staffer at the school district office in Vergenneswho spoke on the condition of anonymity not unlike her criticresponded, Ive never heard of this Woodchuck person. And I dont expect many people have heard of, let alone pay attention to, his web site. Of course he is entitled to his opinion.
