Castleton State College's Matthew Greene (Albany, N.Y./Colonie) has been named the NCAA Division IIIMatthew Greene National Pitcher of the Week honors for the seventh week of 2010, covering games of April 12-18, as voted on by a panel of D-III members of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). Greene was dominant in his only start of the week, earning a complete game shutout at Thomas, a 1-0 Spartan win in nine innings.
The junior right-hander allowed just two hits and walked four, while striking out 16 Terriers. Greene struck out at least one batter in every inning except a one-two-three third inning. He struck out the side in the fifth, and had two strike-outs in every other inning.
It is the first time a Castleton pitcher has earned this national award.
David Brandt (Contoocook, N.H./Hopkinton) has been named the NortheasternDavid Brandt Athletic Conference (NEAC) Eastern Division Baseball Player of the Week. Brandt helped Castleton to a 5-1 week, including a four-game sweep at Thomas and an 18-4 win over Plattsburgh State, ranked 18th nationally.
The sophomore third baseman batted .636 (14-for-22) with a team-best eight runs batted in and seven runs scored while also leading the Spartans in slugging (.864) and on base percentage (.636). Brandt's speeed proved lethal, as he smacked two triples and a double, and stole seven bases.
In the recent 1-0 win over Thomas, Brandt drove in the winning-run in the top of the ninth inning. He followed that up, by driving in the game-tying, and scoring what proved to be the winning run in Sunday's 3-2 triumph. In the field, Brandt fielded his position flawlessly in 16 chances.
Castleton swept all three weekly honors for the third-straight week, and fourth time this season.
Ryan Zielinski (Schenectady, N.Y.) has been named the Ryan ZielinskiNortheastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Eastern Division Baseball Rookie of the Week. Zielinski batted .458 (11-for-24) with two doubles and two triples as Castleton went 5-1, including four conference wins over Thomas and an 18-4 win over No. 18 Plattsburgh State.
Zielinski drove in five runs and scored seven, and posted an on base percentage of .536 in the lead-off spot. The second baseman also slugged .708 and was perfect in the field in 20 chances.
It is the third-straight week Zielinski has been honored by the conference, and third time this season. He leads the Spartans in hits (54), batting average (.415), runs (39), RBI (41), homeruns (5) and slugging percentage (.623).
