LAKE PLACID - Lake Placid High School held its own Winter Carnival last weekend and honored some promising students from the Class of 2010.
Activities ran Feb. 4-6 andincluded a hockey tournament, Sno-Ball Hop, and student competitions in events such as pie eating, snow volleyball, and broomball.
The carnival culminated in a coronation ceremony Feb. 6. Four boys and four girls were nominated from among the senior class to be chosen as king and queen of the carnival.
The nominees are listed below. This year's king is Andrew Baird. This year's queen is Morgan Caudill.
Morgan Caudill, daughter of Catherine Gronlund of Jay, NY and Jubel Caudill of Earlville, NY, was born in Norwich, N.Y., and attended Sherburne-Earlville Elementary School. Morgan lives in Jay, NY with her mother and stepfather, Carl Gonlund, cats Reina and Maddie, and dogs Paco and Sophie. Her older sister, Alexandra, attends college in Hamilton, NY. Her extended family includes Will and Lizzie Gronlund.
Morgan enjoys skiing, reading and camping in her free time, and is a member of the Varsity Basketball and Softball teams. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club, Lambda Pi, and Student Council. Morgan has applied to colleges in the Finger Lakes Region of NY to pursue her interest in elementary education.
Andrew Baird, son of Cindy and Stuart Baird, was born in Saranac Lake and attended Lake Placid Elementary School. Andrew lives with his parents, younger brother, Stuart, and dog, Iroquois. His older brother, Ben, also lives in Lake Placid. Andrew enjoys skiing, hiking, traveling, pursuing environmental issues and hanging out with friends. He is a member of the Blue Bomber Times staff, the National Honor Society, Environmental Club, Key Club, Lake Placid Outing Club, and Treasurer of the Class of 2010. Andrew participates in Varsity Soccer, Alpine Racing, and Baseball. He plans to attend college in New York State.
Jessica Boyer, daughter of Paula Sansone of Lake Placid and Bryan Boyer of Malone, was born in Plattsburgh and attended St. Joseph's Elementary School. Jess lives with her mother, younger sister, Jackie, Speckles (cat) and Sadie (dog). Her extended family includes Bill Hurley, and Lisa and Jessi Lawrence.
Jessica's hobbies include writing poetry and short stories. She is on the staff of the Blue Bomber Times, and has been published in TeenInk. She enjoys bookstores, Starbucks, summer on the lake and being surrounded by her friends. Jess is on the Varsity Volleyball team. After graduation she will pursue her interest in anthropology and comparative literature in college.
Christopher Balestrini, son of Helga and Dr. David Balestrini, was born in Oceanside, Calif., and attended Lake Placid Elementary School. Chris lives with his parents and younger sister, Danielle, dogs Lena and Coal, and cat, Titian. His older brother, David, attends college in Rochester, N.Y.
Chris enjoys rock climbing and snowboarding. His hobbies include reading, running, and flirting. He is a member of the National Honor Society, Lake Placid Outing Club, on the staff of the Blue Bomber Times, and Secretary of the Class of 2010. Chris plans to attend college after graduation to pursue his interest in sociology.
Danielle Lussi, daughter of Martina and Art Lussi, was born in Saranac Lake and attended Lake Placid Elementary School. Danielle lives with her parents, younger sister, Nina, younger brother, Miles, cats Katie and Stripes, and dog, Timber.
Danielle enjoys water and downhill skiing, crocheting hats, playing the flute, and singing in the chorus. She is on the Varsity Soccer, Track Team, and competes at the national level in ski jumping with the New York Ski Education Foundation. Danielle is President of the Class of 2010, a member of the Blue Bomber Times staff, Key Club, National Honor Society, and Lambda Pi. Danielle has applied to colleges in the Northeast to pursue her interest in engineering.
Frank Bazzicalupo, son of Gina Bazzicalupo of Lake Placid and Frank Bazzicalupo of Lake Placid, was born in New Rochelle, N.Y., and attended Lake Placid Elementary School. Frank has a younger brother, Michael, and extended family, Joe, Chris and Joe Orsi.
Frank is a member of the Varsity Soccer, Basketball and Baseball teams. He enjoys spending time at the gym working on a fitness program that will help prepare him for the Pararescue program in the U. S. Air Force. He also enjoys any and all sports. Frank is planning on pursuing a career in the United States Air Force, and his interests in Combat Control and Air Traffic Control.
Alexandria Wyle, daughter of Patti and Steve Wyle, was born in Saratoga Springs, and attended Dorothy Nolan Elementary School. Alex lives with her parents, younger sister, Brianna, and cats Mango and Oreo.
She enjoys singing, reading, and spending time with friends and family. She is on the Varsity Volleyball team and a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club, Chorus, and Women's Ensemble. Alex is Vice-President of the Class of 2010. Alexandria plans to attend LeMoyne College, and study English education.
Skyler Comins, the son of Danielle Bishop of Lake Placid and the late Donald Comins, was born in Amsterdam, N.Y., and attended Lake Placid Elementary School. Skyler lives with his mother and step-father, Brian, and younger sister, Emma.
Sky enjoys longboarding, sports, and video documentation. Sky participates in Varsity Soccer and Basketball. He has filmed and edited several sports related videos and looks forward to pursuing his interest in video production in college after graduation.
