PLATTSBURGH If you were to drive up Clinton Point Drive today, you would see heavy machinery and other equipment busy preparing the grounds of the campus softball field. Work on the field has progressed to the point where a new clay surface and outfield fencing will complete the project by the end of June. According to Todd Roenbeck, assistant dean for student services and athletics, the impetus behind this project was the Clinton Community College Athletic Program joining the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference Division. This was a perfect opportunity for us, explained Roenbeck, because the upgrades are necessary to meet conference requirements. The funding for the softball field work was made possible because of a generous donation by the CCC Student Senate; proceeds from the Annual Cougar Classic Golf Tournament; monies raised by fundraisers benefiting the Athletic Department, including the CCC Challenge; and other smaller donations. The improved softball field will allow the program to attract quality players and opponents; we already have a more competitive schedule for next season, said Roenbeck. The coaches and returning players are excited to play on a field of this caliber. We are thankful for all the support we received for this, especially from Dave Davis, the CCC Student Senate, the CCC Foundation and the Womens Softball Team.
