CHAZY - After 45 years as a Catholic priest, the Rev. L. William Gordon of Sacred Heart Parish is retiring.
This Sunday, June 20, will be the final Mass Gordon will be performing and choir director Joey Trombley feels this is the time for a celebration.
The Mass will begin at its usual time of 10 a.m., however Trombley is hoping people will come out at 9:30 a.m. for a special concert honoring Gordon.
"At Christmas Eve Mass ... we've done a half hour of carols before Mass starts," Trombley explained. "So, I thought, 'Why not do it for his last Mass?'"
Trombley said Gordon has been at Sacred Heart Parish for more than a decade.
"Come in and show support for the appreciation we have for Father and his spiritual guidance for the past 12 years," he said.
During the concert, to make it more even more meaningful for Gordon, Trombley invited harpist and pianist Bill Tisdale and trombonist Lori Salimando-Porter to assist in the musical display.
"I wanted to tie in other musicians that have played for him in church through the years," Trombley explained. "We wanted to have a special [concert] playing some of his favorite music, a half hour before Mass starts."
"It's going to be pretty nice," he added.
During the concert, the Sacred Heart choir will be performing some of Gordon's favorite songs, including "Only This I Want," "Taste and See," and "Pesca de Hombre" - a song Gordon personally requested.
The musicians will also assist the choir during songs played throughout the regular Mass.
At the conclusion of Mass, there will be a luncheon at the parish hall.
