TICONDEROGA The Lake Champlain Quadricentennial Commission is seeking event proposals for the 2009 celebration that will honor the anniversary of Samuel de Champlains arrival to the lake in 1609. The Commissions Commemoration and Events Committee is asking interested people to fill out a Quadricentennial event application online at www.celebratechamplain.org/events. The web site includes an application form that describes the five themes the committee will look for in the events description. An event or program would explore, celebrate and/or commemorate one or any combination of the following themes: The long and rich cultural heritage of Lake Champlain and the Champlain Basin of Vermont. The natural history of Lake Champlain and the Champlain Basin of Vermont. Environmental and other challenges currently confronting Lake Champlain Samuel de Champlains 1609 exploration of our lake basin Particular focus on one or more of the following: Franco-American, French-Canadian and Native American history and Culture in the region; and groups of people contributing to the contemporary cultural history of the Lake Champlain basin. Although applications will be considered throughout 2008, all are encouraged to send their applications by Feb. 15 in order to be included in the first promotional flyer to accompany a Vermont delegation to France in May 2008 (commemorating when Samuel de Champlain left France for North America). The flyer will also be included in the Schooner Lois McClure as she heads north for Quebec Citys 400th anniversary celebration in July 2008. The Quadricentennial celebration will officially begin Dec. 31, 2008. While the year-long celebration will feature several unique, once-in-a-lifetime events, the commission has decided to involve existing events and market them as part of this yearlong celebration.
