Vermont is crisscrossed by roads old and new. In some cases, today's highways followed for Indian and pioneer trails into what is modern Vermont.
Several years ago the Weathersfield Selectboard tasked the recently organized Ancient Roads Committee with the task of proving the existence of 14 antique roads in town.
After searching civil and historic records, the committee identified 310 old roads-some in use today, others abandoned in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, some were laid out on maps, but were never constructed. Some roads have vanished from map and landscape, with no trace left behind.
A talk sponsored by the Weathersfield Historical Society will showcase these recent finds and some of the problems faced by the committee searching through town records.
DeForest Bearse and Willis Wood and other members of the committee will meet at Martin Hall in Ascutney, Vt., Saturday, March 12, at 7 p.m. Refreshments will be served. No charge. For further information call Willis Wood at 802-263-5547.
