Kathryn Cramer, opens new book store and consignment shop, Champlain Avenue Inc. in Westport.
Westport welcomed a new business with a vast collection of books and style at Champlain Avenue Inc.
Owner Kathryn Cramer bought the building in 2007 and opened half of it as Dragon Press Book Store, which not only sold books but served as the central hub for her Science Fiction printing business, Dragon Press. The other half of the building served as a private residence.
The store is a collection of vintage clothing, books and furniture in both like-new condition and antiquarian pieces.
“I have the clothes and books arranged around the store so it gets people to look at both,” said Cramer. “I’ve had some fun placing some of the antiquarian books that have covers or themes that resemble the pieces of clothing.”
The Champlain Avenue shop will be working in conjunction with the Adirondack Attic Consignment Shop in Keene, promising to have new stocks of clothing weekly. The store has a variety of different clothes that could have been taken straight from the 1960’s, 50’s and today in sizes for all customers.
“We want to keep a variety of things for all shoppers so the sizes you normally find in a retail store, we have here,” said Cramer.
Cramer, an author and publisher of science fiction, said while the store was the home of Dragon Press it was rarely open and when they would host events it would be more of a destination for people from out of town.
“Our focus was more science fiction but at Champlain Avenue we want to host more local authors works, readings and discussions,” said Cramer.
The shop has a collection of children’s books, a large selection of fiction and non-fiction books as well as science fiction.
The store is located at next to Ernie’s Market. Currently the store is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday until the it’s grand opening planned for June 1, when Cramer said the store should be open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. all week, including weekends.
“I realize right now 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. isn’t prime time for shopping but it’s just till we get settled and officially open,” she said.
The shop is taking consignment items of clothing and furniture by appointment. To make an appointment stop in during open hours or call 962-2760.
“Stop in, we’re going to have a lot of different things happening here over the summer, new merchandise in every week and of course, we have a lot of books,” said Cramer.
