The town board passed a resolution authorizing the transfer of $125,000 from the highway department’s unappropriated, unreserved fund balance to various other highway expense funds at their regular Aug. 8 meeting.
The transfer was prompted by a tough winter, as a result of which the department was running out of fuel money; unexpected repair costs stemming from the spring flooding; and a number of pieces of department equipment breaking.
“Stop breaking things,” Supervisor Peter Glushko quipped to the highway superintendent, Michael Farrell.
In other regular business:
• Due to security concerns, the town plans to install a lighting system on the Bridge Path.
In the next month or so, Superintendent of the Water and Sewer Department Gregory Timmons said, he will rent a lift for other purposes, and will also use it to install spotlights.
“We’ve already got a conduit right there that we use for the Christmas lights that we put on the fence,” Timmons said. “It’s temporary to see if it works, and we’ll go from there.”
Council Member Brandy McDonald suggested the town purchase vandal-proof lights.
• The 12-inch water main on River Road has been installed, according to Timmons.
“They’re getting ready to cross the road and tie it back to the existing main that’s there,” Timmons said.
Workers will then tie in three service laterals for homes, before tying in LaFleur Lane and Champlain Valley Apple Storage.
• Alden Stevens, a records management specialist who had been organizing town documents, would complete his work with Peru Aug. 9, according to Town Clerk Kathleen Flynn.
“My shelves are in and everything’s all organized; he’s finished in the basement,” Flynn said, adding that she was trained in the new filing system.
• In order to deal with a drainage problem, the board passed a resolution authorizing the town highway department to improve a drainage easement on Spitfire Drive. The resolution is subject to a permissive referendum.
• The town was written up for minor items on its worker’s compensation insurance inspection by New York State Insurance Fund, according to Glushko Aug. 9. In the water garage, these included yellow paint that needs to be redone, an exit that needs to remain unobstructed, and empty pallets that need to be stored flat. In the highway garage, these items include the 20 pound propane tank on the gas grill that should be stored outside, and damaged grates on the floor drain that need to be replaced.
