PLATTSBURGH-The town council approved to allow qualifying customers to apply for water credit adjustments at its June 6 meeting, according to Town Supervisor Bernard C. Bassett. The policy went into effect the night of the vote.
Qualifying customers include those who have lost a significant amount of metered water through no fault of their own, Bassett said. For instance, he said, they might have suffered a leak caused by the digging of their neighbors, which ruptured underground pipes. He said that likely only two to three customers a year would qualify.
"We don't want anyone to be penalized for a situation out of their control," Bassett said.
Non-qualifying customers include those who lost water through negligence, such as by failing to fix a leaky toilet or a faulty pipe, Bassett said.
"The customer has a responsibility, and that must be exercised," Bassett said.
The policy limits a customer to one credit adjustment per 36-month period, Bassett said. Any customer, whether a private citizen or a business, may apply for a credit adjustment.
The town pumps water to citizens over a 48-square-mile area from wells and water towers, Bassett said.
