CASTLETON -Rich Alercio was introduced as Castleton State College's first head football coach. Each of the five finalists for the Castleton State College head coaching position had to design a five-page booklet about what they would do with the new program. The Spartans begin play in 2009 and right now the first scheduled contest is a North Atlantic Conference game on Sept. 26 at home against Gallaudet University on homecoming weekend. Alercio is a 1987 graduate of Ursinus College with a degree in economics.Alercio has been on the staff of The College of New Jersey the past 15 years, most recently as the offensive coordinator and athletic development assistant. His duties included creating the offensive playbook, game planning and play calling, and generating fund-raising for both football and the department of athletics. Alercio will be allowed one full-time assistant coach at Castleton and that person will also be the defensive coordinator. He will be coaching in a state that features 34 football-playing schools, compared to 353 in New Jersey. Alercio will not officially be on the job until July 1 in the meantime he will be doing what he can to help start the program. He will be getting the word out to prospective recruits that there is a Castleton State football program. Alercio plans to get acquainted with the high school football coaches in Vermont.
