SARANAC Cub Scouts from Saranac Pack 35 recently celebrated the Chinese New Year as part of their annual Blue and Gold Banquet. The banquet, held at Saranac Methodist Church Feb. 10, incorporated the observance of the Feb. 7 holiday into this years theme. Blue Chinese lanterns decorated with Scouts pictures and names hung over the tables where Scouts, their families and special guests were served a potluck dinner. Chinese placemats, chop sticks and fortune cookies also added to the festive decor. After dinner, the Scouts participated in a dragon parade. Then, their guests of honor, Eagle Scouts Chris Aierle and Travis Sperle, shared what they did for their Eagle Scout projects. During the event, Wolf Den Leader Ray LaDuc awarded Jacob LaDuc and Andrew Rivera with their hard-earned Wolf Merit Badges. Bear Den Leader Dan Shadrick called Keegan Bulluck, Walter Ward and Dylan LaFountain forward to receive achievement beads. Webelos Leader Stan Hatch awarded the second highest Merit Badges for Cub Scouts the Webelos Merit Badge to Roland Drollette, Benjamin Hatch, Stratton Holland, Ethan Mangum, Rafael Rivera, Logan Jarvis and Logan LaFountain. The Webelos are now working to attain the highest rank for Cub Scouts, the Arrow of Light Badge. Certificates of appreciation were also awarded to volunteers for their leadership role in the past years Cub Scouts Pack 35 activities. Recipients were Kim Prew, Peggy and Jim Lapeirre; Ray and Paulette LaDuc; Pamela and Rafael Rivera; Kelly and Dan Shadrick; Stan and Adina Hatch; Greg LaFountain; Allan Reece; Becky Drollette; Cheryl Mangum; and Boy Scout Carson Hynes. The evening wrapped up with educational activities led by Stan Hatch, including a game of 20 Questions to guess which animal is being honored by the Chinese this year. In less than 20 questions, the youths correctly guessed the honored animal is the rat. After pitching in to help with the clean-up, Scouts headed home clinging to their Chinese New Year activity books, personalized Chinese lanterns, and hard-earned badges and awards.
