More than 27 inches of fresh powder snow covered the high peaks of the Adirondacks over the past few days, and winter sports enthusiasts are cheering from cloud nine. Whiteface Mountain has 50 trails open with more expected to open soon. Ideal conditions exist for downhill skiing, snow boarding and snow tubing at Gore Mountain in North Creek, Titus Mountain in Malone and McCauley Mountain in Old Forge. For night skiing there is West Mountain in Queensbury. Cross country skiing is simply fantastic at Lapland Lake in Northville where all 50km of trails are open and groomed. For the Olympic Sports Complex in Lake Placid, a snowy start to the season has 50km of world class Nordic trails ready at Mount Van Hoevenberg. Snowmobile season is also in full swing. Old Forge has a fine network of trails in the central Adirondacks for sledding, skiing, snowshoeing or cross country skiing. There are 500 miles of great snowmobile trails and almost 60 km of groomed Nordic trails at the Robert Moses and Higley Flow State Parks, as well as stunning views from wilderness trails throughout the Five Ponds Wilderness Area near Cranberry Lake.
