FERRISBURGH Troopers from the VSP New Haven barracks and VSP Traffic Safety Unit responded to a car and pedestrian collision in a work zone at the intersection of Route 7 and Hollow Road in Ferrisburgh Aug. 25. Chittenden County Sheriff Deputy Mike Sicino was reportedly struck in the middle of the intersection while directing traffic. He sustained minor injuries; no fire or rescue crews were requested. Route 7 in the area is under construction and paving crews were in the process of paving the intersection. The area was clearly marked as a construction zone. Investigation revealed that while out of his vehicle and assisting with traffic control duties, Sicino was struck by a vehicle performing a left turn from the Hollow Road onto Route 7, southbound. Another flagman was waiving the operator across the intersection and Sicino was assisting in the direction. Operator of the vehicle, John Lawrence of Burlington, said his view was obstructed by his vehicles own "A" piller (post that attaches the windshield and roof to the vehicle, driver's side) and he did not see the deputy until the collision. This was a low-speed collision which knocked the deputy off his feet. The deputy was seen by a local doctor and later went to Porter Medical Center for x-rays. Lawrence was issued ticket.
