BURLINGTON - Fifth graders in Kelly Alper's science class at Mater Christi had an exciting experience learning about the circulatory system when veterinarians, Drs. Elizabeth Miguel, Jenny Brown and Donald Brown, came to their classroom recently accompanied by Pongo, a pet of two of the doctors.
Pongo is used regularly by the Browns to help teach the different systems of the body by giving live demonstrations with the help of their dog.
An EKG of Pongo's beating heart is flashed on a screen and the students are guided by the veterinarians to recognize the heart and its arteries and see them in action on the screen.
In addition to watching the EKG, each child also had an opportunity to listen to Pongo's heart, using a stethoscope.
The big dog was completely cooperative throughout the entire process, clearly enjoying the attention of the children.
