The Eat Well Play Hard North Country Coalition (EWPH) announces its Request for Mini-Grant Proposals for 2008. This year, EWPH is focusing on the following two priority need areas: school nutrition and age appropriate physical activity in child care settings and after school programs. $3,000.00 is available for EWPH mini-grants and applicants may apply for up to $1,000.00 for a project. Any organization in Hamilton, Essex, or Franklin Counties directly or indirectly serving children ages 2 to 12 interested in addressing these priority needs are encouraged to apply. EWPH will fund projects that result in environmental and/or policy change so the results are sustainable rather than one-time events (applicants may refer to examples in the application). The deadline to apply for a mini-grant is Feb. 1. Mini-grants will be awarded for a six-month period beginning Feb. 25. Applications and more information are available online at www.heartnetwork.org . In 2007, four mini-grants were awarded to promote physical activity and nutrition to children. Northern Lights School received funding to add playground equipment at their new location in Saranac Lake. Wells Central School implemented a summer hiking program for families and purchased curriculum materials to educate students about school nutrition policies. Warren-Hamilton Counties Community Action Agency used mini-grant funds to provide clients with fresh fruits and vegetables in food baskets and also to provide education on how to store and prepare the produce. The Child Care Coordinating Council of the North Country offered trainings on age appropriate physical activity to child care providers and utilized mini-grant funds to purchase materials for the providers to take home and use with the children they care for.
