The Essex County Fair begins with the Haulin' Junk Rollover Contest on the fairgrounds in Westport.
You'll like it, you'll love it, and Essex County Fair officials hope you'll want some more of it.
The fairgrounds in Westport will again come alive with rides, games, shows and more starting Wednesday, Aug. 10, and running through Sunday, Aug. 14, all part of the 163rd annual County Fair.
"We try to make it just a little better each year," Jim Westover, member of the fair board, said.
One new show at the 2011 fair will be Allen Scott, who will perform songs not only in the style of country superstar artist Tim McGraw, but will also look and sound the part.
"We heard about him at a conference and when you play his CD and Tim McGraw's CD together, you cannot tell the difference," Westover said.
Another new event takes place the first night of the five-day extravaganza, with the first Haulin' Junk Roll-Over contest on Wednesday, Aug. 10.
"The car goes up the ramp and rolls, and it gets five points for every side it hits," Westover said. "If the car goes all the way over and back onto its wheels, it gets 20 points and drivers get three attempts with the most points winning. We have never seen any other fair in this area have something like this."
The rollover contest will be limited to only 15 cars, and those cars must be compact, 4-cylinder models.
Along with new events, there will be several popular events from last years' fair that will make their return, including the Torres Family One Ring Circus.
"After the shows, the people will come out into the stands and visit with the kids and answer questions," Westover said. "The children really enjoy that part and it was a very well-attended event."
For the second year, the Egglefield Brothers Ford Demolition Derby will be held on the Saturday of the fair, Aug. 13. Prior to 2010, the derby had been held on the last day of the fair when the organizers moved it from Saturday to Sunday.
"We wanted to give people the chance to come in for the event on a night when they did not have to be up for work the next morning," Westover said. "We still drew a lot of cars and a large crowd to the event, so we feel that this is working."
Specials will include Senior Citizen's Day on Wednesday, Aug. 10; Loreman's Day and Car Load Day on Thursday, Aug. 11; Adirondack Tobacco Free Network and Youth Day on Friday, Aug. 12; Egglefield Ford Day on Saturday, Aug. 13; and Gordon Oil Day on Sunday, Aug. 14.
