TICONDEROGA - A pair of Ticonderoga athletes will be on a national stage this weekend.
Heath Geiser and Kris Ross will play with the Plattsburgh North Stars when the semipro football team takes part in National Bowl Weekend in Deland, Fla.
"It's going to be an awesome experience," Geiser said. "This has never happened before; it's pretty exciting."
The North Stars will play the Washington, D.C., Explosion at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 16, at Spec Martin Stadium.
A radio play-by-play of the game will be available over the internet by Champs Sports Network.
There are more than 800 semipro football in the United States, Geiser explained. The top 10 have been invited to play in five bowl games in Florida this weekend.
The North Stars earned their place in the game by going 11-1 in 2010 and winning the Empire Football League championship.
Plattsburgh is currently ranked in three published national polls. The North Stars are ranked seventh in the American Football Top 25, 15th in the American Football News Today poll and 22nd in the National Football Events Coaches Poll.
The Washington, D.C., Explosion comes into the game with an 11-3 record.
"This is a big deal," Geiser said. "I love football and this is a great way to go out."
Geiser, a former Ticonderoga High School player, has played 16 years - the last nine with the North Stars.
"I'm calling it quits after this game," he said. "I still love football, but I'm just too old."
Geiser is a running back. Ross plays in the North Stars secondary.
