ADDISON - Vermont Agency of Transportation official John Zicconi said Nov 23 that experts are now thinking that the Lake Champlain Bridge may be "dropped" into the water of Lake Champlain with explosive charges before it freezes within the next 30-50 days.
Following demolition by carefully placed explosive charges, bridge debris could then be fished out of the lake for disposal. Zicconi since said the 80-year-old structure is too unstable to dismantle slowly in pieces. It would be safer to bring the bridge down in larger segments.
Demolition and debris removal contractors have not been named at this time.
