SPRINGFIELD-An attic fire in a house on Park Street in Springfield caused considerable damage, according to several firefighters on the scene. The blaze broke out in the attic around 8:30 p.m. May 22.
According to a fire police official, the owners of the Pine Street residence had just returned home from a vacation; they were able to call in the alarm when the fire was first detected.
The blaze inside the two-story house was fought primarily by Springfield, Chester, and Bellows Falls firefighters. Due to the house's slate roof, it took crews four hours to get at and extinguish the flames. While the house structure was saved, there was damage to the roof and attic areas.
There were no injuries and Red Cross medics arrived on the scene to help family members. The family has not been identified at press time.
Investigators are still investigating the cause of the fire.
