On Jan. 23 the Brandon Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 12:53 p.m. located at 3180 Franklin St. Upon arrival, firefighters found a fire in one unit in an occupied apartment complex. The Brandon Fire Department requested Vermont State Police and Division of Fire Safety to conduct an origin and cause investigation into what started this fire. In a news release dated Jan. 24, Det. Sgt. Thomas Williams (VSP) and Investigator Joe Benard (DFS) listed Michael Pumpian, age 47 of Brandon, as the resident of the apartment that was damaged. Pumpian escaped and was uninjured. This investigation was conducted the day of the fire. Investigation showed that the fire started within an apartment unit on the northern first floor. Investigation showed that the area of origin was within the living room of this apartment. The fire was found to have started in the area of a "Karaoke" device on the west wall of the room. All other sources of ignition were ruled out. The fire was deemed not suspicious and was ruled undetermined pending examination of the electronic device by an appropriate authority. No individuals were in the apartment of origin during the fire. Numerous other occupants of the building escaped without injuries. Damage is estimated to be in excess of $50,000.
