TICONDEROGA - Fort Ticonderoga will host the 14th annual Ticonderoga Challenge Outdoor Ep e Tournament on Saturday, May 29.
This is the season's final event for the Vermont Fencing Alliance, a non-profit community club which has offered foil and epee classes in Middlebury and Charlotte since 1992.
The Ticonderoga Challenge is the closing competition of the Green Mt. Division's Champlain Cup league. It draws fencers from New England, New York, New Jersey and Canada. Fencers who have been vying for points since September have one last chance to earn a Champlain Cup trophy, which will be presented at the close of the tournament.
Preliminary rounds of the competition take place on the Pavilion lawns from 10 a.m. to approximately 3 p.m. Finals will be presented in the parade ground inside the fort at 3 p.m. There is no charge to watch the preliminaries and spectators are welcome to attend the finals at the fort where one can also explore the collections, take tours, and more.
The VFA has produced a number of Junior Olympians, several North Atlantic champions and one national team member over the years, but remains primarily dedicated to promoting fencing locally to people of all ages for fitness and recreation.
Coach Viveka Fox is a 33-year veteran of the sport, former All-Ivy fencer and former North Atlantic women's foil champion. More information on local fencing opportunities can be found on the VFA website at www.vtfencingalliance.com.
