WARRENSBURG The Warrensburg Free Methodist Church on River Street will be celebrating their 125th anniversary Sunday, Sept. 14 with a church service at 10:45 a.m. and a celebratory picnic at 1 p.m. at the Gates Farm north of Warrensburg on state Rte. 9. The celebration will include the Oak Ridge Methodist Male Quartet, traveling up from Herkimer for the event. The quartet will be performing at the morning church services as well as the afternoon picnic. The historic Warrensburg Free Methodist Church itself opened its doors in 1883. It has been interconnected with other Methodist institutions throughout the area. According to Pastor Richard Leonard the present weekly congregation averages around 100 individuals. This is up from an average of eight when Leonard, a Methodist Pastor for nearly 60 years, first arrived in 1997, Leonard said. Numerous expansion projects at the church are either completed or in the planning stages. A new parking lot has recently been installed which will work in concert with the parsonage built in 2004 and a planned structural expansion which will be able to accommodate 250 worshippers. In a recent interview, Pastor Leonard said that it has been a pleasure serving the Warrensburg Community and that he and Associate Pastor Thomas Boghosian look forward to the future with the new amenities. Leonard said that he hopes to see as many local residents as possible, regardless of their religious affiliations.
