PLATTSBURGH - On Feb. 24, 18-year-old Allie Langdon passed away after a two-week fight for her life. This Sunday, May 23, a benefit will be held to raise funds for the family she left behind.
When Allie ended up at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vt. Feb. 10, after a severe car accident, she faced many procedures through the next 14 days, including being put in a barbiturate-induced coma. All of which became very costly.
"[Allie] didn't have health insurance, so her mom has that bill," explained Regina Clukey, a friend of Allie's mother, Kathie. "She's got about $350,000 worth of medical bills right now."
On top of the medical bills, Kathie is also trying to finish paying off the funeral expenses.
To help ease the struggle, Clukey and other friends will host a benefit spaghetti dinner this Sunday from 12-6 p.m., at American Legion Post 1619 in West Plattsburgh.
"She's got $3,800 left," Clukey said of the funeral expenses. "We're trying to help her with that and then anything extra will go towards hospital bills."
There will also be a bike ride sponsored by the Un-Easy Riders M.C., beginning at North End Repair on State Route 3 at 11 a.m., with the ride concluding at the Legion around 12 p.m.
"I used to work with Kathie over at Curtis Doors and one of our fellow coworkers is an Un-Easy Rider and we all just wanted to get together and try to help Kathie out," explained Clukey.
The benefit will also feature a Chinese auction, 50/50 drawings and activities for children including face painting and games.
"Kids are welcome," said Clukey. "It is family-oriented."
She is hoping she will see the community come out to support the event and a local family in need.
"It's very rare that we're helping a local family and can actually see the family there," Clukey said. "I know we're going to have a nice turnout ... A lot of people want to go."
"It's amazing how many people [Allie] knew," she added.
Registration for the bike ride will begin at 10 a.m. and costs $5 per bike. The dinner at the Legion is $8.
