NORTH RIVER The Adirondack Center for Writing presents "Golden Spike to North Creek: The First Transcontinental Railroad, Dr. T.C. Durant, and his Failed Scheme to Exploit the Adirondacks," a slidetalk by David Haward Bain, author of the prizewinning Empire Express and The Old Iron Road. This will begin at 4:15 p.m., is free and open to the public in The Birches, at the Garnet Hill Lodge in North River. David Haward Bain, of Middlebury College, presents the slidetalk he has given at the Smithsonian, Library of Congress, and universities and libraries around the country, appended here by the story of North Creek's Doctor Durant, who in the 1870s used his millions from the building of the Union Pacific Railroad to buy up much of the Adirondacks (with his son he owned more land than the state of New York!), scheming railroads and development of that pristine terrain. This program is part of a history writing program ACW is presenting that day. For more information, contact ACW at (518) 518-327-6278.
