SHELBURNE -- There was a happy crowd at Shelburne Orchards on Sunday in spite of the rain or perhaps the smiles were in response to the rain, since the crowd was made up of farmers and people who love farmers, and everyone was aware of how long farmers had been waiting for a good rain.
Sunday was the 6th Annual Vermont Small Farms Food Fest, a celebration of the harvest season and Vermonts food producers, hosted by Nick Cowles of Shelburne Orchards.
The rain, which ranged from a gentle mist to a steady soaker during the festival, may have kept some of the usual crowd away, but the giant white tent, surrounding kiosks and the apple barn were full of people sampling food, talking to the people who made the food, and enjoying the music. There were games for the kids, a donkey ride, and a juggler willing to share the secrets of his craft. And of course apples to be picked and apple pies to take home.
